Together we all accomplish more. I heard this growing up, and it stills applies today. Strong teams are compiled of individuals with a simple mindset that CAN be difficult to achieve:
It is not about me. It's not about you. It's about us, all of us.
This mindset requires individuals to be selfless. It requires people to put their individual needs, wants, and desires to take a back seat to the team goals. This can be difficult due to the fact that people naturally want to take care of themselves and their interests. I get it.
But.....if the individuals put the team goals first, the team frequently realizes success and the individuals benefit. This can take some time so be patient.
As leaders there are several steps we can take to promote selfless behavior to reach team goals:
- Lead with integrity- when leaders do the right thing, people see it and want to emulate it.
- Communicate (team) - set team expectations and make them clear. Set milestones along the way.
- Communicate (individuals)- set individual expectations with team goals in mind.
- Enthusiastically reinforce selfless acts- if you see a selfless act celebrate it, especially in a team setting.
- Communicate (individual/team)- address selfish behaviors in an individual setting that do not promote team goals. When you hold people accountable in a respectful way, people notice and most often respond in a positive way.
- Promote- use successful team results to reinforce the team mentality, no matter how small the success is for the team. Build on it.
If you can use the mantra "It's not about me. It's not about you. It's about us, all of us" you will be able to recognize that the together we all can accomplish more.
