Last week we talked about the "W" in the Wolff Way, Work Ethic. This week we venture into the "O" for Off Time.
In a previous blog I talked about the ability to activate our work ethic by "firing it up"; going beyond our limits to get the job done. But everyone needs time to recharge. We should make time in our day, week, month, and year designated to maintain good mental health. I find for me personally, my mental and emotional health suffers if keep the pedal down for too long and without an occasional breather.
There are definitely jobs and careers which require 24/7 availability, no doubt. I have one of them. I get it. But find the time to disconnect. Find time to put the phone down. According to an article from the University of California- Davis Health titled Social Media's impact on our Mental Health and Tips to Use it Safely, "The average person spends 145 minutes on social media every day....social media can negatively impact our overall wellbeing by fueling anxiety, depression, loneliness and FOMO (fear or missing out)". This also applies to checking email 24/7. We simply do not have enough time recharge and be present in the moment. Our mental health suffers.
Off time for each person may be different. Your off time might be a weekend getaway. It might be more time with your family. It might be heading out to the woods or a good walk in the park to unwind. Visits to the ocean and beach towns work especially well for me. Find the time to get good rest (I struggle with this). Our bodies and minds need time to recharge. Whatever it is, make time for yourself.
Get after it out there, but build in off time to keep your mental and emotional health sharp.
